Age 2: A Taste of Montessori

(age 2 by Sept 1)

Description

Our Lead Teachers will gently guide children through the rich Montessori environment that nurtures precisely the skills that children seek to master at this remarkable age. Children will explore classroom materials that develop self-care, refine motor skills, foster concentration and independence, and develop grace and courtesy all at their own pace and according to their passions. Language and social skill development are key ingredients in our cooperative environment as is moving toward mastery of the numerous small challenges of a child’s everyday world.

Our talented Music staff will lead them in song and movement each day. Children will explore art activities from paper-cutting to painting, enjoy in-house field trips and presentations and romp outdoors on our secure, skyline view playground, all with an eye toward their happiness (and sufficient intellectual and physical exhaustion to prompt them to take a long afternoon nap).

(age 3 by Sept 1)

Note: This camp is currently full. Please contact the office for further inquiries.

Description

Joyful, playful learning is the goal of the Montessori method and materials. Our classrooms are awash in activities in language development, reading, writing, numeracy, mathematics, geography, science, art, pattern-recognition, motor skill development and social graces, all designed to attract the child and nurture in them a lifelong love of learning. More importantly, we offer children free choice of activities in order to nurture their love for purposeful activity.

Mornings will begin with either tennis on our courts (ages 4 and up) or soccer on our picturesque playground (ages 3 and up) that looks on Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. As the day heats up, our campers head indoors for classroom time and lunch and then enjoy afternoon activities such as creative writing, poetry, yoga, magic and more. The day concludes with additional outdoor fun and water play.

Description

Equal opportunity for both sides of the brain!

Our second floor Upper School Campus will host Brain Camp, the perfect summer experience for children entering grades 1-3 and a perfect fit for play with a purpose. Mornings will be spent on sports and other physical or creative activities. Afternoon themes will vary by session:

June 27 - July 8:  Young Linguists
Students will be immersed in their choice of Hindi, Mandarin or Spanish, drawing on related cultural activities such as music, dance and cuisine.

July 11 - July 22:  How Our Nation Was Born
Afternoons will bring the acclaimed How Our Nation Was Born, a fantastic retelling of American history that focuses on songs from the colonial period, crafts, games and discussion. Led by our own Ms. Cristina and Ms. Rose, this experience includes reenacting the Continental Congress that gave birth to this nation, making laws and much more!

July 25 - July 29:  Lego Robotics I - Intro to Intermediate
Get ready to explore a whole new world of Lego! Now students can design, build and program their very own Lego robots and watch them spring to life. Students will learn basic techniques of mechanical design and computer science by building and programming with Lego's Mindstorms NXT. This is great hands-on learning and playing with a technology twist that will challenge students to innovate and exercise their inner inventor!

August 1 - August 5:  Scratch Video Game Design
On your mark...  Get set...  Code! You already know your children love video games, but now they can learn how to program their own. Students will learn how to create a variety of different games using Scratch, an introductory program to coding developed by MIT's Media Lab. They will also learn beginner to advanced programming techniques that will develop their critical problem solving skills in Math and Science and boost their creativity in the arts. Learning has never been this much fun!

Ages 9-13: Titans of Tech

(age 9 by Sept 1)

Description

Mornings develop the body and spirit with outdoor sporting options such as basketball and tennis, introductions to yoga or karate and the exploration of music.

Friday field trips to museums, parks and more will round out the sessions!

Afternoon thematic sessions will include the following:

June 27th - July 8th:  Stop Motion Animation
Kids turn arts and crafts into moving images! Campers will learn how they can turn basic photography into short animations with just a camera and a computer! Using key fundamentals in Art, your child will develop characters and backgrounds, create elaborate cartoon sets and edit their short animations in the Hue Animation App. No prior experience is required, just creativity!

July 11th - July 22nd:  Lego Robotics II - Advanced
Go, Robots! Go! It is time to step up the engineering game. Students will develop some new skills in advanced mechanisms and programming using Lego Mindstorms EV3. This camp will focus on getting to know the Simple Machines and will introduce programming puzzles that your child will need to engineer his or her robot to solve. Each day, the robots will have a new simple machines challenge and a new problem to tackle!

July 25th - July 29th:  Music Production
Let's Rock & Roll! Campers will become music makers and produce their own songs with Apple's GarageBand App. The app is a great tool for unleashing musical creativity and the best part is that no prior experience is required. Students will learn the ins and outs of making a drum beat, program a piano roll with a wide variety of instruments, and then mix and finalize their own songs to be the next iTunes hit!

August 1st - August 5th:  Movie Making
Lights, Camera, Action! Camp becomes a movie set! In the time it takes to watch a movie, your child will be learning the key elements of how to build a set, act in, direct and film a short movie. In pre-production, students will map out a story board, write a script or plot a documentary. After the camera stops rolling, they will learn post-production editing, transitions and special effects using Apple's iMovie App! Is your child ready for a close up?
