Toddler 1 students continued their plant education by planting herbs such as cilantro, basil and chives. The children gathered all the necessary materials and made sure to carefully follow the steps necessary to growing their herbs. They began by filling their cups with soil, carefully adding their seeds on top, covering the seeds in more soil and then giving their plants a few sprays of water. Students then placed their plants near a window where they can receive plenty of sunshine and water. Each day the children carefully observe their plants for any changes and make sure to give them plenty of water.
Flower Arranging as a Practical Work
Practical Life is an essential component of the Montessori philosophy, not only for the necessary skills that it teaches, but also for the opportunities in independence that it provides for young children. Flower arranging is a wonderful example of Practical Life activity where Toddler 1 students thoughtfully prepare vases and arrange flowers for the classroom. Students begin by filling small vases with the appropriate amount of water. They then sort the flowers into their appropriate vases based on the flower length and size. Then students proudly find places for each vase around the classroom where their peers can enjoy the beauty and fragrance.
Five Little Ducks
The Five Little Ducks counting and song work is a popular new material in the Toddler 1 classroom. Students count out five baby ducks and one mother duck and then sing the lyrics to “Five Little Ducks”. With each verse, one baby duck is subtracted from the group of ducks. This is a wonderful opportunity for children to work individually with counting and identifying quantity, as well as form small groups of peers to join in the activity. Here are the lyrics to the version sung in class:
“Five little ducks went out one day,
Over the hills and far away,
Momma duck said ‘quack quack quack quack’
But only four little ducks came back.”
