The Toddler 1 students practiced counting with hearts using a popular new piece of work in the Math area.  This activity contains a series of cards, each of which displays a numeral along with the corresponding number of dots, and a basket full of small heart-shaped erasers.  The child places a heart on each spot on the card, thus learning to associate the numeral with the quantity it represents.  While many Toddlers are becoming quite good at counting by rote, the association of numeral with quantity is quite a different process. By varying the objects being counted to fit holiday or seasonal themes, students maintain interest while they work to master this challenging skill.
